THE HISTORY OF ORIENTAL RUGS

Although the exact origins of carpet weaving have not been determined, it is known that the Egyptians of the 3rd millennium bc wove carpets for the most part of linen ornamented by sewn on brightly coloured pieces of woollen cloth. Egyptian influence apparently spread throughout the Middle East and then to Mongolia and China. Some investigators credit Central Asia , Turkestan, and China with the origination of carpets, and in the early s a rug dating back 2, years, made with Turkish knots, was found in Siberia. Early Chinese carpets were made of knotted silk pile with backings of wool or cotton, but the pile of later carpets was made of wool. Wool pile was also used in Central Asia by early nomadic tribes who acquired it easily in their wanderings. Nomadic rugs were woven on simple horizontal frames that could be rolled up for travelling. Early looms consisted of two forked branches joined by a crosspiece holding the suspended warp , or lengthwise threads, through which the weft , or crosswise threads, were woven.

Poetry, wine, and song — such splendid things have, for millennia, constituted the very essence of the saffron-strewn Iranian soul and psyche. While these, undoubtedly, are some of the things for which Iranian culture is known and celebrated, perhaps no element of it is as recognisable and striking — particularly abroad — as Persian rugs and textiles. Adored for their intricate designs, sumptuous colours, and inimitable craftsmanship —not to mention their investment value — Persian rugs have not only found their way into households and interiors the world over, but also onto catwalks and concert stages, as well as in scores of artworks.

Far from being a recent phenomenon, the fascination with these textiles is a history nearly as illustrious as the woven wonders themselves.

This study compares age estimates of recent peat deposits in 10 European ombrotrophic precipitation-fed bogs produced using the C bomb peak, Pb, Cs, spheroidal carbonaceous particles SCPs , and pollen. At 3 sites, the results of the different dating methods agree well. In 5 cores, there is a clear discrepancy between the C bomb peak and Pb age estimates.

In the upper layers of the profiles, the age estimates of C and Pb are in agreement. However, with increasing depth, the difference between the age estimates appears to become progressively greater. The evidence from the sites featured in the study suggests that, provided aboveground plant material seeds, leaves is selected for dating, the C bomb peak is a reliable dating method, and is not significantly affected by the incorporation of old carbon with low C content originating from sources including air pollution deposition or methane produced by peat decomposition.

Pb age estimates that are too old may be explained by the enrichment of Pb activity in the surface layers of peat resulting from a hypothesized mechanism where rapidly infilling hollows, rich in binding sites, may scavenge Pb associated with dissolved organic matter passing through the hollow, as part of the surface drainage network. Until further research identifies and resolves the cause of the inaccuracy in Pb dating, age estimates of peat samples based only on Pb should be used with caution.

With its highly geometricized design, this wool rug differs markedly from the refined courtly carpets, and represents an earlier tradition of weaving that was popular in Europe, where rugs like this are found in fourteenth- and fifteenth century churches and paintings. In fact, the depiction of a rug with the same design as this in an early fifteenth-century Sienese painting allowed for the dating of this example. This is one of only three complete rugs of such an early date and its design of large confronted animals, each with a smaller animal inside, probably derives from contemporary textiles.

The age of a rug is critical in determining the carpet’s value, but determining age is also one of the most difficult skills to acquire.

The age of a rug is one of the critical points in determining the value of a rug. But determining how old a specific rug might be, is also one of the most difficult skills to acquire for the rug enthusiast. Older antique rugs might show some evidence of wear. The back of the rug offers a better opportunity to determine age. Newer modern rugs will feel fuzzy on the back since their yarns still possess their fibrous surface. As a rug ages, even if walked on carefully, the underside will become polished or abraded through pressure and friction, diminishing the fuzzy or hairy texture.

Very old rugs will feel gritty, sandy, or even smooth on the back. A fine rug that looks tightly woven, but that still feels somewhat floppy or supple, is probably old, since even tightly woven rugs become supple with time. Color or rug dye quality can also help determine how old a rug is. If a rug has pale colors, fold it to spread the pile open.
